Board Of Trustees Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Jericho library board of trustees will be held in the meeting room at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, June 9

A Reality Check

Dr. Joe Kenner comes to the Syosset library at 2 p.m. for a discussion on current events. This seminar will take the form of a town hall-like discussion with plenty of time for attendees to participate and check facts about key current events.

Talk About Books

Join the Jericho library and facilitator Fran Cohen in a discussion about loss and survival, art, beauty, fate, self invention and obsession in the book The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Listeners are welcome. Refreshments will be available. Program is at 7 p.m.

The Syosset library presents a free multimedia look at the Smothers Brothers with Ira Epstein at 2 p.m. With their cutting edge comedy, they tested the boundaries of censorship in the US and paved the way for a new generation of TV comedy shows.

Basic Emergency Awareness

The New York National Guard, along with experts from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and Fire Prevention, will hold two sessions at the Jericho library to help protect residents in case of a natural or man-made disasters. The first session, June 11, starts at 2 p.m. The second session, July 1, starts at 7 p.m. Registration required.

Want to go on a cruise? Go to the Syosset library for a free presentation by Joe Valenti, cruise lecturer, at 2 p.m. This is an informative and entertaining talk about planning, preparing, and selecting a cruise, and how to get the most out of your experience, including packing, shore excursions, communications, money matters and medical information.

Movie: Inherent Vice

The Jericho library presents the movie Inherent Vice at 2 p.m. In 1970, drug-fueled Los Angeles detective “Doc” Sportello investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson. Rated R.

Thursday, June 18

Rehabilitation of Sagamore Hill

The Syosset library celebrates the re-opening of Sagamore Hill with a free 2 p.m. presentation by the historic site’s curator Susan Sarna. A discussion on the enormous undertaking of rehabilitating the Theodore Roosevelt Home, and the work involved in relocating and protecting the museum’s collection with this PowerPoint presentation.

Saturday, June 20

Dragon Boat Festival

Join the Jericho library at 2 p.m. for the Dragon Boat Festival, in commemoration of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan (278-240 BC). For 2,000 years, his spirit has influenced many and he remains revered by people from all over the world. Enjoy this celebration and delight in the entertainment of poetry, music, dance and more. There will be a dragon boat craft for the children to take home and a taste of zongzi, flavored sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, a treat for all. Tickets are required.
