The New York State Master Teacher Program, in partnership with the State University of New York and Math for America (New York City counterpart), creates a state-wide network of the highest-performing STEM teachers dedicated to sharing their expertise with peers and attracting high school graduates to careers in STEM.
There is an extensive application process, part of which involves a written test in pure mathematics, live interviews, and a presentation to a panel of mathematicians on an applied topic which is not taught in high school.
“In addition to a deep understanding of content and pedagogy, Master Teachers are lifelong learners; they are never satisfied with their current body of knowledge. There is always more to learn, to understand, and to apply,” said Helene Kriegstein, Curriculum Associate of Mathematics. “That is why Master Teachers are also students of their respective disciplines. They are expected to take coursework and also provide professional development for pre-service and in-service teachers.”
